Air Conditioning Technology
Air Conditioning Technology is a program that caters to men and women interested in and who are passionate about building a career as a specialist in conditioned air. It is created to help students learn and develop knowledge and skills that open up various employment opportunities for them.
West-MEC’s Air Conditioning Technology program introduces students to the basic elements of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. Here, students will have the opportunity to analyze electrical systems, perform maintenance repairs, troubleshoot and install air conditioning and heating units.
Apart from the core curriculum, learners are trained for the job-seeking process through mock interviews and résumé-building workshops. Accommodations and modifications are provided to high school students throughout the program based on the IEP/504.
The program combines academics, theories, and practical application. Students are trained to respond to real-life settings that require practical skills and hands-on involvement, which are essential in a real-world workplace setting. As part of the program’s work-based learning, guest speakers are often invited to talk about heat, ventilation, and air conditioning-related topics.
Each semester lasts for 18 weeks.
After completing the one-year program, successful candidates will be prepared to seek one or more certifications like the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 608, 410A, 608 Universal, 609, and GWP certifications. Moreover, West-MEC offers industry credential tests at no additional cost. Through the Air Conditioning Technology program and certification, students are provided a pathway to economic independence.
Upon program completion, and after students receive their certifications, they have various career options to pursue, including:
- heating, ventilation, air conditioning service technician (HVAC service technician)
- heating, ventilation, air conditioning installer (HVAC installer)
- HVAC/R Sales
- HVAC/R Manufacturer
- facilities technician

- insulation installer
- refrigeration installer
- residential and commercial air conditioning technician
- unit replacement helper
The job of a heating, ventilation, and AC technician requires strength and agility while providing an interesting work life. There are opportunities in various work environments like construction, schools, hospitals, and homes. Self-employment is also a viable option in this field.
Air Conditioning Technician entry-level salary range: $12.00 – $13.77 per hour*
