The interactive Hairstyling Program teaches students the latest techniques in hairstyling, haircutting, and coloring from experienced cosmetology professionals in a state-of-the-art salon setting.
During the program, accommodations and modifications are provided to high school students based on the IEP/504. In addition, along with Maricopa Colleges, it provides Prior Learning Assessment (PLA). PLA helps students pursue specific AAS degrees. They can earn college credit through the Hairstyling program and transfer these credits to a community college or university, towards a specific degree.
After completion of the two-year program, successful candidates will be prepared to seek one or more certifications like the Arizona Board of Cosmetology License in Hairstyling or OSHA 10 among others. Moreover, West-MEC offers industry credential tests at no additional cost.
Careers that a student could pursue after receiving their certification(s) are: Hairstylist, color technician, salon owner*, salon manager*
Certified Hairstylists work long hours and interact with clients to help them understand procedures and make them feel at ease. After sufficient experience, they often start their own business like a stylist for special occasions like weddings or opening a full fledged salon.
Hairstyling entry-level salary: $12.00 – $15.00 per hour**
